My mother believed that she had no right to happiness so long as even one person on Earth was suffering. As her only daughter, fiercely loyal and reverent, I took this in deeply, as if it were The Truth.

For me, it led to decades of stomach aches, guilt, and depression, among other manifestations of pain.

For my mother it was a lifetime of compulsive and relentless worrying, as well as a hard-lined grip, trying to control everything in her power. If things would only go the way she wanted, everything would be fine. Or so she thought.

In fact, it sucked her dry of the very energy she might have used in service to others.

The First Noble Truth, according to Buddhist teaching, is that existence entails suffering. If you are alive, you will inevitably experience pain.

For many, perhaps you included, this is most keenly the case in the here and now.

There are many ways people can experience pain:
  • of a physical nature
  • in the emotional sphere
  • long-endured
  • circumstantial
  • multi-dimensional

Within every one of us, there is Wisdom and even, as Bob Dylan wrote, Beauty, behind the pain, and often when we begin to touch that Intelligence, the experience of pain begins to shift.

Together we will ease and move the energy of your pain –
  • to shed light on the message it is carrying
  • to learn practices that reduce its grip on you
  • to see pain through a new lens
  • to use the pain to serve the Higher Good
  • to see into yourself with compassion, forgiveness, and even gratitude

Here is the vision statement for my practice Doorway to Healing:

“To build world peace and fellowship,
one person,
one moment at a time”

It is based on this famous verse by Lao-tse:

If there is to be peace in the world,
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations,
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities,
There must be peace between neighbors.
If there is to be peace between neighbors,
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home,
There must be peace in the heart.

How do we create peace in the heart?

“Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
—C.S. Lewis
